The Wolf Among Us: Episode 5 – Cry Wolf (PC) Review

The wolf finally bares his fangs.

It’s been a long and perilous ride for Bigby and company.

After the murder of two fables, it was up to the sheriff to take charge of the investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

During this journey, the big bad wolf struggled to find a balance between his primal nature and the role of protector he’s found himself in.

With the conclusion of season one, we find ourselves with a clear picture of just who Bigby really is, while the whole truth remains just out of reach.

Knowing that the end might be just behind those doors made every moment feel more tense and significant.

After the inevitable encounter with the crooked-man, Bigby finally found himself at the center of this whole mess.

Whether it be with diplomacy or brute force, Bigby intended to get to the bottom of this mess and bring in those who were responsible for the murder of Faith and Lily.

While the episode plays out the way we’ve come to expect from the series, the scale has been bumped up significantly to mark the climax of the adventure.

The typical “big fight” scene present in each episode is here as well, but it’s bigger and more epic than ever with the big bad wolf finally letting loose his full primal rage.

The many branching paths in conversation and the consequences that they bring are here too as expected, but are more varied than ever, and have more overall impact on how things play out.

There is also a big conversation set piece involving most of the denizens of Fabletown, where many of the actions the player made in the previous episodes are referenced to make arguments for and against the player.

It’s a throwback to the concept that every choice matters, and while it propagates the illusion of that idea more so than the actuality, it was still nice to see and interesting to see play out.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fiercest of them all?

When everything is finished and things seem to be going back to whatever passes for “normal” in Fabletown, we’re left with a dangling string in an otherwise smooth ball of yarn.

What that string represents remains a mystery, and while I have a few theories of my own, it will be left in the air for the moment, and hopefully answered if and when they decide to create season two of the Wolf Among Us.

Overall, I found the journey into Fabletown a delight; filled with memorable characters built on a solid mechanical foundation, and while I believe there more to be done with the formula, it’s the finest Telltale has made so far and well worth experiencing.

Fun Tidbit – The design for you know who was quite impressive (spoilers, don’t click unless you’ve finished the episode).
