P.O.W. – Prisoners of War Review

This mini should probably stay in prison.

Another new PS3/PSP mini by SNK is P.O.W. You play as one or two (if you’re playing co-op) prisoners of war trying to escape an enemy base, all the while trying to take down as many enemies as you can in your daring escape.

The game is a side-scrolling brawler, much like Final Fight or Streets of Rage. You can punch, kick, and jump in order to take down enemy soldiers or escape their attacks. You can also pick up weapons dropped by enemies. These include knives and full auto machine guns.

As stated above, the game can be played cooperatively with another player. This can help you out in the long run because this game is rather difficult for two reasons: it doesn’t control very well, and if you get caught up in a gang of enemies, you’re pretty much dead. Luckily, there’s a button exclusively used for pumping quarters into the game, so you really can’t run out of continues.

The art style is a little bland, and nothing really stands out about the visuals or the game play. It’s all very standard.

The game really doesn’t hold up well. It’s a quick beat ’em up that really doesn’t have too much variety other than the weapon pick ups. You and a friend can breeze through the game in about 30 minutes with infinite continues. You’ll need them, because you will die a ton.

For $2.99, if you’re looking for a quick brawler, it’s OK. It’s not going to blow your socks off, but you could get a good half hour worth of play out of it. I do suggest checking out other minis before dropping the cash on this, though.
