Kingston HyperX Cloud Gaming Headset (Hardware) Review

Solid sound for the price.

I use a lot of gaming headsets. I am fickle when it comes to what I use to propel sound into my eardrums. I have dedicated sets for PS4, XB1, and even for my TV. One of the biggest drawbacks is comfort. Very few headsets make having them on more than an hour, painful.

The new Kingston HyperX Cloud changes all of that. Now my de facto set for podcasting and PC gaming, the HyperX is one of the most comfortable headsets I have ever used. Factor in the price and optional goodies it comes with and this is one robust package.

The HyperX comes packed with tons of extensions cables, a slick carrying case, detachable microphone for voice chat, and some slick packaging. All for the low price of $90. It is hard to for me to call this a budget headset, but that is precisely what it is. It is designed to give the most bang for the buck, and it succeeds. The 53mm drivers in the cups sound fantastic. Playing shooters with the bass pounding and explosions littering the battlefield sounded great. Sure it isn’t pumping any type of surround sound, but the experience is still sublime.

Platform: PC, PS4
MSRP: $89.99

It is hard not to appreciate the packaging that comes with the HyperX headset. The box it comes in is thick and heavy, and once opened the headset sits in a nice form-fitting encasing. All of the peripherals are housed in an included compartment, and the inside of the box is emblazoned with a message from the company president. It just screams quality, and is something I really appreciated about the package.

I have designated this headset as my PC device now, mostly because of the comfort. I record a 2+ hour podcast weekly, and the quality from the mic is decent, alongside not having my ears aching after each show. I also tested the device on the PS4 and XB1 using their standard inputs. It worked fine on PS4, but XB1 was a no go, for audio or chat.

There isn’t much more to say about the HyperX headset. It sounds good, lets me voice chat with friends during game play, and is extremely comfortable. This isn’t designed to simulate the big budget audio devices that can cost nearly as much as a gaming console, but it gets the job done. Those looking for a solid device that can work on PC and PS4, and don’t mind it being wired, should definitely check it out.
