YOU’RE FREE TO FEEL BORED.

Generation Zero is an open world first person shooter that allows for four player co-op. I don’t know why anyone would want to though because there is barely enough to do for one player.

PLATFORMS: PS4, XB1, PC
MSRP: $39.99
PRICE I’D PAY: $9.99

Functionally this game is fine. The shooting works. Enemies are not just dumb targets. Problem is that I found myself running through the forest for 15 minutes with zero robots appearing. The robots seem to collect around villages and points of interest, which is fine, but in an open world where a lot of the game is forest, the fear of being attacked at anytime should be present.

That doesn’t really matter though because the game’s sole mission is to pick up papers and audio logs to tell a story. Collect all info required? The next mission is doing the same thing, usually in the same cookie cutter houses.

Once I found the rifle and got a scope for it, combat became a joke. Just aim for the gas tank and watch the robots explode.

There are a few issues as well. Ammo and med packs don’t stack while they are in the gun or mapped to the quick use buttons, which means manually removing the bullets or med packs (and a few other items) and combining them in the inventory menu and then putting them back. I also had some graphical issues which I tried to capture via the video capture in the Xbox One, which ending up freezing the game. I had to force my Xbox One to turn off. I deleted Generation Zero shortly after this issue, and it refused to disappear from my games list.

This game has so much potential, but it is so barren I can’t recommend it. The visual and audio aesthetic are right up my alley, but I found myself bored. It harkens back to the No Man’s Sky release: plenty of space to do absolutely nothing. This feels like early access, not a full retail release. Skip until they announce any potential updates that add content to this.

Good
  • Concept
  • Basic mechanics work well
  • Large map
  • Lots of cosmetic items to dress the character in
Bad
  • Nothing really interesting to do
  • Houses are cut and paste
  • Missions are very plain
  • Robots only congregate around points of interest
  • No vehicles so there’s a lot of walking
