Colors! 3D Review

A nice app for the artistic 3DS owners.

I’ve never been the artistic type. Of course, I would dabble here and there in painting and drawing, but truth be told, I was never really any good at it. The 3DS has some decent tech that can allow for some unique applications. One of these is Colors! 3D.

Colors! 3D is a painting and drawing application that allows the user to create or modify pre-existing images. The unique aspect is the fact that you can paint and color in 3D so you can have multiple layers of a painting at your disposal. With this feature in place, you can really make your paintings pop out. It all works very well and is quite impressive.

While painting, you can change what plane you’re drawing on at any time. You can also change the color, size and kind of brush, along with many other aspects to make sure you get just what you need. I did find that changing these things is somewhat cumbersome due to the way I played the game. I had the 3DS either in one hand and the stylus in the other hand or I had the system laying on a table or desk. Some of the change options are activated using the bumpers. I would constantly have to either pick up the 3DS or readjust my grip on the system to change something. It’s not bad; it was just a comfort thing.

The app offers a full online gallery where you can upload your creations as well as look at other artists’ pictures. I have to say, there are some really nice images out there, and looking at some of these gave me inspiration to try different things. Another nice feature is the replay. Anytime you draw something, after you are finished, you can go back and watch exactly how it was drawn in sequence. Think of it like a speed painting video.

Colors! 3D even offers up co-op painting through local play with two 3DS systems. I was, unfortunately, unable to test out this feature, so I cannot comment on it. I can see how it would be very unique, though.

For $6.99 on the 3DS eShop, if you’re into painting and like some cool tech, this app is for you. The replay feature is really nice, and I haven’t seen anything like it on a gaming system before. The ability to view the gallery is also a great touch. For painting apps, this is probably the best one you can get.
