Back to the Future: The Game – Episode II: Get Tannen! Review

[tab:Review]

Marty and Doc are back in this action packed episode to fix the past-and screw it up again…

It’s time again for the next episode of Back to the Future: The Game. In episode 2, “Get Tannen,” Marty and Doc take up where they left off in episode 1. They now have to travel one day back in time in order to keep Marty from blinking out of existence. Marty has to avoid running into his other self in 1931 to not to mess up time even more.

The game play remains the same from the first episode. There are puzzles to complete and talking up people into helping you. Marty has to infiltrate Kid Tannen’s speakeasy to get evidence to put Tannen away for his crimes. Otherwise, his future will be filled with Tannen crime lords.

The game’s puzzles seem a bit easier this time around, which makes the game’s pacing very smooth. Since Back to the Future is a story driven game, this helps the player get to the next plot point more quickly. The hint system remains the same as well, giving you three levels of help with the third level basically being the solution.

The humor and nostalgia are still there, and this episode really gives off an epic feel. Marty and company get into some dangerous situations, and fighting against Tannen feels like something out of the movies.

There are a few graphical glitches that I encountered; nothing that really hurts the game, just something you’ll see in the background that you can’t help but look at while a cut scene is playing. As far as problems with puzzles activating, like in the last episode, there were none to be found.

This episode will last you about 2 hours, depending on what you do. It’s about the length of one of the movies. The episode ends on an awesome cliffhanger that will leave you wanting to play the next episode right away. Luckily, you don’t have to wait as long as last time. Episode 3 is slated for release next month.

If you haven’t tried out Back to the Future just yet, you really need to. The first episode is now free to play on the PC and Mac, and you can purchase a season pass and get all the episodes when they release. This episode really kicked it up a notch as far as story and action goes. Plus, Huey Lewis’ “Back in Time” plays during the credits! Awesome. Yes, I am a geek. If you played the first episode, you’ll definitely like this one. I can’t recommend this episode, as well as the full package, enough.

  1. This is easily turning out to be my favorite Telltale offering of all time.
