#OneNote

There are some games where the name says it all. While I frown at the idea of putting hashtags into game titles, I mean come on, this fad will pass and in twenty years when someone reads the name of this game…OK you know what, never mind. I am rambling. #KILLALLZOMBIES is exactly that, a game where players get a gun, a blank room, and are faced with hordes of zombies. When I died, it was over. The idea is to rack up the highest score before perishing. That’s it.

While simple in practice, there is something highly addictive about the game’s design. As of this writing there is literally only one mode, and one level. The idea is to see how long I could last. Mowing down zombies slowly fills up an XP meter, and each level banks a power-up that I could use immediately, or stack until things get hairy.

These power-ups are completely random. When triggered I was able to choose one of four different things that could happen. These ranged from a simple turret that would aid me in my struggles, to simply exploding myself in exchange for a massive XP boost. There is a constant progression outside of each match that unlocks new guns and such. So opting for death in exchange for some sweet points was certainly a viable option.

Strangely, even with the limited features I couldn’t stop playing. It has a great loop of just one more run. I knew I could do better, I knew I could get further, plus mowing down these hordes of the undead was just super satisfying.

None of this works though if the core loop isn’t fun. Thankfully, the shooting and random events keep things interesting. While the hordes of zombies are pretty standard, the game throws things at the player constantly. From new weapons, to spinning blades of death, to RVs falling from the sky, the insanity never stops. It’s like a random playground of death at times.

Visually the game is pretty bland outside of the animations, which are absolutely stellar on all levels. The music is a rush of adrenaline, although the sounds are a bit loud, but I believe that is by design. I felt like the game was screaming at me almost the entire time I was playing it.

#Killallzombies is a nice pick up and play experience that works thanks to its design. The developers have promised more content is coming, but right now there is really only one thing to do. It sticks to its namesake for better or worse. Still, I couldn’t help but enjoy every session I logged and I will definitely revisit it once new content arrives.
