Infinity Runner (XB1) Review

Werewolves in space!

Running games have become extremely popular in the last few years, especially on mobile phones. The idea of a game that goes on forever is no original idea. What if a version of the genre contained a story, in space, and also werewolves? In space, no one can hear you scream…but they can watch you run, run, and run!

Infinity Runner takes the idea of the endless runner genre and gives it a little bit if new life. Awakening on a ship with the help of an assistant that is telling the player to escape, things go from bad to worse. Suddenly the player is on the run. Of course, being on the run here somehow involves a spaceship, werewolves, and transformations, but it sounds more exciting then it truly is.

Taking place in first person, the runner has all the mechanics that are typical of the genre, players can dodge left and right, having to always push in the direction of a turning hallway to be successfully. Sliding underneath falling pipes and jumping over gaping crevices are also another element needed to master, with my favorite being the electrical slider players grab and then swing left and right, dodging elements as well. Combat also comes into play with quick time events but it’s rather lackluster.

While the story mode is interesting, the core mechanics still come off rather simply. Once players have done a few of the levels, most of the game’s core ideas have been presented. The story that propels it isn’t anything that will keep the player’s attention, and ultimately the game feels a bit rough overall with music muting during combat sections or the random hazards that appear, causing instead death. While the checkpoints are very abundant, after 3 lives it’s over and it’s back to the start.

If you’re looking for another runner game with a sci-fi setting, Infinity runner isn’t bad, it’s just not really that good either. I had fun with the game in limited capacity, but overall every time I was getting into the grove, the lack of lives or just the boring story took me out of it. Granted there are a few other modes besides the story, including a true endless runner mode which I got the most fun out of, but it’s ultimately a game that I wanted to enjoy more then I actually did.
