Fallout 4 DLC Impressions

As of this writing, if players have picked up the season pass for Fallout 4, two of the DLC content pieces have dropped. Automatron and Wasteland Workshop are the two new additions as of now, with the third and largest coming being Far Harbor. I don’t want to dissuade anyone from picking up these first two content packages if they haven’t grabbed the season pass, but unless absolutely dying to return to the Common Wealth for new content, it’s not exactly a definite recommendation.

Automatron is the more significant content drop, and adds a new quest line involving lots and lots of robots. A new robot companion joins, and the ability to create custom robots also leads the way to some fun building and experimentation. There is a couple interesting moments and overall this will take folks a few hours to complete. There is a caveat to this DLC, which also effects the second DLC.

Wasteland workshop is exactly how it sounds. Now there is more content to mess with concerning bases, wildlife can be capture in cages, and arena fights can take place. Forcing two characters to duel it out in a fight to the death is entertaining if not ultimately a bit shallow. There is a bevy of new content to mess with concerning the base, if players enjoy tinkering with their home base. Folks that didn’t care for the base content of building and creating most likely won’t find themselves drawn to this element either.

What we have is two DLC’s that almost feel segregated. One with a new quest and some new content, another with more options for the base building and free play. Noble additions to the core game, and anyone just picking up the game with the season pass for the first time will take the content at face value, as it mixes in with the core game as if it’s simple a part of it. That in line is part of the problem with the first two content drops. They feel as if they could have been free or minor updates to the core game.

Another aspect is that both require certain levels of skills to be developed in order to take advantage of the workshops and what can be built. So if players never put points into those skills, better get cracking. I believe that the Far Harbor content, which Bethesda is stating is their biggest DLC content ever, will be the true aspect of the season pass that hopefully gives all completely new content, along with the new area, and makes the season pass worth it, because as of now, it’s not worth the price. I’m highly looking forward to Far Harbor and ZTGD will have a full review of that content and finally determine if the season pass was worth the price.
