Super Nintendo: From A to Z – The Letters “P and R”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and tons of games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

The system everyone has been waiting for, the Super Nintendo.

Let’s continue with the letters “P and R.”

princeofpersia

Prince of Persia

A reimagining of the game that took the PC crowd by storm, Prince of Persia on SNES was a more colorful adventure with more detailed sprites than the original. However, it still retained much of the punishing difficulty of the original as well as its terrific animation. After not being able to finish the PC version of Prince of Persia, I thought I might have a better shot at the SNES version. I did not.

rtype3

R-Type III

One of the best classic space shoot em ups on the market made its made to the SNES with a bang with new forces(weapons) and bosses. It also included a two player co-op mode which was a great addition to make this difficult game a bit more feasible to beat and I have fond memories of playing it with a buddy as we cursed at each other for getting hit and losing lives.

radicaldreamers

Radical Dreamers

Even though it was never released in the states, when I learned that there was a spin-off of one of my favorite games of all time, Chrono Trigger existed in the world, I needed to play it. Luckily it was fan translated after some time and I was finally able to play it. Even though it wasn’t as RPG, I quite enjoyed the story and characters. Ultimately, playing through Radical Dreamers made playing through Chrono Cross much more rewarding.

returnofdoubledragon

Return of Double Dragon

A divisive title in the Double Dragon series as just as many people hate this entry as they love it. I think it’s a proper follow-up to the classic side scrolling beat em up as it just made expanded on the original in every way. More weapons, attacks, enemy types and bosses, all wrapped up nicely with that co-op action. What more can you want from a Double Dragon game?

robotrek

Robotrek

A little RPG that’s often overlooked when people talk about RPGs on the SNES. Even though it seemed like a typical JRPG, the game had a great sense of humor and the fact that I was inventing and building robots to fight for me, I felt it had some unique aspects that kept me intrigued all the way till the credits rolled.

rockmanandforte

Rockman and Forte

Yet another title that never officially made its way to the states on the SNES, Rockman & Forte is a spin-off of the Megaman series starring the blue bomber and a brand new character named Forte or “Bass” in the States. The entire game could be played through as either character with different movesets as Rockman had his staple slides and Forte could double jump and also attack diagonally and above adding a new layer to combat. The game would make its way to the states on the GBA titled, “Megaman & Bass”.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
