PlayStation: From A to Z – The Letter “N”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

Our first series will focus on Sony’s first entry into the console business, the PlayStation.

Let’s continue with the letter “N”.

n2o

N2O: Nitrous Oxide

N2O is one of the most interesting shooters on the platform. Not only does it run at a blazing 60 frames per second, it is further intensified by the soundtrack provided by The Crystal Method. Now all the kids will need to run to Google to find out who The Crystal Method is.

needforspeed3

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit

I love racing games, and few were as good on the PSOne as the third entry in the Need for Speed series. This formula of cops chasing racers spilled over into the PS2 and PS3 era, and still remains the best in the franchise.

nightmarecreatures

Nightmare Creatures

This gothic action game is still considered one of the coolest ideas to come out of the PSOne era. It even garnered a sequel and then disappeared. We need more games of this type, and I am still holding onto hope that someday we will see a return of this dark series.

ninjashadow

Ninja: Shadow of Darkness

The guys that published Tomb Raider made a ninja game? Yes it is true, and they relied heavily on the success of that series to promote Ninja: Shadow of Darkness. Going as far as to include a first look at Lara’s new adventure. It wasn’t great, but still enjoyable.

nuclearstrike

Nuclear Strike

I love the strike series. Give me an isometric helicopter shooter any day of the week. It was sad when this series eventually died, and I have always dreamed EA would bring it back in the form of a downloadable twin-stick shooter. Alas my dreams have still yet to come to fruition.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
