The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.
Our first series will focus on Sony’s first entry into the console business, the PlayStation.
Let’s continue with the letter “M”.
MediEvil
Few games from the PSOne era demand as much nostalgia as the adventures of Sir Daniel Fortesque. Although it garnered a sequel, the series has been quiet since. Those who enjoy action adventure games need to go back and check this title out.
Mega Man 8
Little is as timeless as the Blue Bomber. Mega Man 8 was the only true numbered sequel to grace Sony’s platform. It was also fantastic, and the last one with the original team at the helm. Fans of Mega Man need to play this game, also jump, jump, slide, slide, jump. Nightmares induced.
Metal Gear Solid
There are a handful of games that define the PSOne. Kojima’s masterpiece is at the top of that list. Metal Gear Solid remains one of my all-time favorite games. It is timeless, and as of this writing, over 15 years later, we are about to conclude the MGS saga. Everyone should play this game.
Monster Rancher
This game was built on a gimmick, a really brilliant one for the time. Imagine Pokemon but where the monsters were created using compact discs. This unique title allowed players to put in any type of CD to create a monster, there were even special discs at events. My AOL discs finally got some use.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Another series still going strong today, Mortal Kombat defined the ESRB. This compilation was one of the most broken in terms of balance ever created, and we loved it for that. Playing as boss characters, making up fake combos for retro characters. It was a mess; a perfect mess.
Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
