PlayStation: From A to Z – The Letter “E”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

Our first series will focus on Sony’s first entry into the console business, the PlayStation.

Let’s continue with the letter “E”.

Echo Night

Before Bloodborne, before the Souls series, developer From Software was cranking out original titles for the PSOne. Echo Night is a unique first-person adventure game set to a supernatural tone. It has some rough edges, but is ultimately a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

einhander

Einhander

Square used to make some pretty awesome titles outside of their RPGs. Einhander is still considered one of the best shooters of all-time, and one session will show you why. Definitely a must-own for any PSOne collector.

elementalgearbolt

Elemental Gearbolt

Light gun games are something of a lost art form. Working Designs was one of the premiere companies back in the PSOne days, their cover art was unparalleled. Elemental Gearbolt meshed these two great things into one solid light gun package.

espnextremegames

ESPN Extreme Games

Being one of the few playable demos on the launch PSOne demo disc, I spent a lot of time with this title. It was stiff, generic, and hard as nails, but I couldn’t stop playing it. The sequels improved, but for some reason this entry stands out more than the rest.

evilzone

Evil Zone

Fighting games were aplenty on PSOne, so standing out was difficult. Evil Zone has nothing special going for it, I have no idea why I remember it so fondly, but it is definitely a game I spent more than my fair share of time playing.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
