PlayStation 2: From A to Z – The Letter “W”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

Our second series will focus on Sony’s sophomore entry into the console business, the PlayStation 2.

Let’s continue with the letter “W”.

warofthemonsters

War of the Monsters

Just recently re-released on PS4, War of the Monsters had players going up against giant monsters in city arenas in the style of some of the old Godzilla movies. It was a fun action game for its time, but I hear that it doesn’t hold up as well as people would have hoped.

warriors

The Warriors

Based on the movie of the same name, this Rockstar Games experience blended beat ‘em up combat and a lot of running just like in the film. It was fun romp through a movie I had honestly never saw at the time.

wildarms3

Wild Arms 3

A series that I loved in the PS1 days, I pick this game up on that fact alone. I always loved the pseudo-Wild West theme and while not my favorite game in the series, this one was not bad for its time.

winback2

Winback 2: Project Poseidon

Yeah, I got this game on the fact that I adored the first WinBack on N64. It doesn’t hold up very well and really didn’t hold up that well when it first came out, but I still played it and still enjoyed what I did. That camera, man. It was bad in some spots.

wipeoutfusion

WipEout Fusion

There’s nothing quite like the sense of speed in a Wipeout game. Wipeout Fusion was no exception. A great racing game that I played a lot of back in the day and one that kept me liking the series up to this day. A PS2 game I think everyone should have.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
