PlayStation 2: From A to Z – The Letter “S”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

Our second series will focus on Sony’s sophomore entry into the console business, the PlayStation 2.

Let’s continue with the letter “S”.

Shadow of the Colossus

Since I had never played Ico before, I didn’t know what to expect from SotC. I rememeber the TV commercials for it looking larger than life and decided t give it a shot. While everyone praises it for its storytelling, I always enjoyed it for the giant boss fights figuring out the puzzle that was climbing this giant rock creature was always fun to me.

shinmegamipersona4

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

I hold this game to a high standard. This game is one of the best role playing game I have ever played. Not only did it capture the gameplay of a great turn-based RPG, but the collection aspects of a monster type game. On top of that, the story while colorful and goofy at times, had a deeper tone about acceptance, friendship, and conquering one’s demons. This should be a must play for any person who plays video games.

Silent Hill 4: The Room

I know this is not everyone’s favorite game in the series, but for me, it was such a drastic change from the previous games, I really enjoyed it. Taking place in the mind of a person who is both trapped in his apartment and in his own mind, players navigate a hellish world in different places of his apartment. It was genuinely creepy and honestly, my favorite Silent Hill game.

spiderman2

Spider-Man 2

It’s rough to think I can actually put a movie licensed game on any kind of list, but Spider-Man 2 was actually really great. The way the web mechanics worked and how the sense of speed and flight was portrayed was fantastic. Also, being completely narrated by Bruce Campbell was an added bonus.

SSX

I actually didn’t pick it up when I got my PS2 originally. In fact, I played it a good year after it had come out, but man; it was such a fun action sport game. It had flashing effects, great music, and all the crazy moves to go along with it. By far this was one of the best launch titles for the system.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
