PlayStation 2: From A to Z – The Letter “P”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

Our second series will focus on Sony’s sophomore entry into the console business, the PlayStation 2.

Let’s continue with the letter “P”.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

While I enjoyed the entire trilogy on the PS2, the first game really stood out to me with its lighter tone and more fantastical feel. Warrior Within and Two Thrones were great, but embraced the “hardcore” with more violence and adult content. The Sands of Time was still an action packed game and was still one of the first to use the parkour traversal we see in almost every game now.

Project Snowblind

Brought to us by the creators of the Tomb Raider reboot themselves, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos took to the FPS genre and gave us this little gem. While it may look and play archaic nowadays, I remember having a blast with it on my PS2. I also remember this being one of the very few PS2 games I actually tried to play online.

psiops

Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

Taking the third person shooting that works really well, adding in some really fun psychic powers like telekinesis and mind control, and you have yourself one of the funniest PS2 games to play. Really, anyone out there that has not tried Psi-Ops, you’re missing out.

Psychonauts

One of those games a lot of people say they used to love, but I have found many have never played, Psychonauts is a very strange game brought to us by Double Fine and Tim Schafer. This action adventure game has players going through different levels of the sane and insane minds of people during a summer camp for psychics.

punisher

The Punisher

Another brutal game, but one that stood out to me on how well it handled everything. I remember for its time have a bit of controversy due to the torture/interrogation scenes Frank Castle would use to get the information he needed. It was a fun shooter and a pretty great licensed game which is hard to come by.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
