The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.
Our second series will focus on Sony’s sophomore entry into the console business, the PlayStation 2.
Let’s continue with the letter “K”.
Katamari Damacy
A strange game. Oh, so very strange, but so addicting and simple. Roll a ball, gather things in an area with said ball, and watch it get bigger and bigger. Then use the things you’ve gathered to make stars in the sky. As the ball gets bigger, I can eventually gather bigger things. It really is something I had never seen before.
Killer7
My first introduction to the insane world of Suda51. What originally grabbed me was the art style and while I know a lot of people dislike this game, I enjoyed just how weird it was. Switching characters on the fly for different situations, talking to dead people for advice, invisible enemies, and one of the freakiest save rooms ever made this one of the weirdest games I have ever played.
KillSwitch
Next to WinBack on N64, this is one of the earliest “stop and pop” shooters I remember playing. Using cover was essential to survival and kill.switch made it rather frantic at times. It’s actually not a bad shooter and one of the first of its kind.
Killzone
I’m sure most gamers know this name by now. Not the best first person shooter, but I did enjoy it when it first came out. It also set the stage for what would become one of Sony’s larger franchises. Also, shooting up essentially “space Nazis” is always fun.
Kingdom Hearts
Another game that I’m sure most has heard of. Throwing Square characters into a game with Disney characters and adding an action RPG system around it all made for a really fun time and having Jack Skellington and Tarzan as party members was great. Although, it did have a rather confusing storyline that still confuses me with each iteration. Also, while I really like this game, the gummi ship can go straight to hell.
