The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.
Our second series will focus on Sony’s sophomore entry into the console business, the PlayStation 2.
Let’s continue with the letter “C”.
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One
Before I got my 360 and was introduced to the next generation, I was first introduced to Call of Duty through the PS2 and Big Red One. Storming the beaches of Normandy in a video game seems worn out now, but in 2005, I had never done it before, and if anyone knows me, they know how obsessed I became with the franchise in later years.
Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001
One of my favorite crossover fighters, it had a giant roster full of both companies’ well known characters. Allowing players to choose their type of super meter called “grooves” there was a ton of customization. With an announcer with some of the most ridiculous lines ever, this was a pretty great fighting game.
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
I remember when the Castlevania games went from 2D to 3D, people were all up in arms about it. Granted, it’s hard to follow in the footsteps of the amazing Symphony of the Night, but I feel that Lament of Innocence did a decent job with the franchise. I greatly enjoyed it and the soundtrack was catchy as hell.
Chaos Legion
Once again, not a great game, but a game I remember playing a decent amount. Hack n slash in nature, it gave me a sense of a Dynasty Warriors before I even knew what Dynasty Warriors was. Sure it may go down as a poor man’s Devil May Cry, but I still played it.
Clock Tower 3
After my time with the PS1, survival horror games became one of my favorite genres. While I had played the Clock Tower series before, Clock Tower 3 actually stood out to me. It was more cinematic for me and had some rather creepy characters. The entire game was kind of insane.
