PlayStation 2: From A to Z – The Letter “B”

The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.

Our second series will focus on Sony’s sophomore entry into the console business, the PlayStation 2.

Let’s continue with the letter “B”.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance

Set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Dark Alliance takes a more action based approach to the isometric RPG. Feeling more like Diablo or Torchlight, these wander away from the tactical type of games the original BioWare RPGs that started the series.

Batman Vengeance

While not the best Batman game in the world, one thing that stood out to me was this was one of the very first times playing a Batman game with Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker. It seems novel now, but in 2001, it was a treat to feel like I was playing episodes of The Animated Series.

beyondgoodandevil

Beyond Good and Evil

One of those games that is on everyone’s list even though I think a lot of people have nostalgia for a game that didn’t really play. Here’s to hoping we finally see that sequel that was teased. Granted, I’m not holding my breath. Still, this is a highly appreciated game that needs to be played.

Black

I actually played this game for the first time when covering it for Zombie Frog Game Club way back in the old days with my Phoenix Down co-host, Matt Quinn. With a blockbuster presentation, exploding barrels everywhere, and some actual destructible environments, this action FPS was full of guns and firefights.

bloodrayne2

BloodRayne 2

Hack n’ slash goodness right here. While being a vampire is already pretty cool, you get the chop up some cultists and suck their blood while you’re at it. While the first game introduced us to Rayne, the 2nd game really opened up what she could do making it a pretty fun action title.

Tune in next week for the next collection of titles.
