Drew’s Favorite Game Soundtracks

Anything by Nobuo Uematsu
Yes, I know this is cheating, but it’s my list. I can’t name a single game or game series that is my favorite that Uematsu has done. He’s had his hands in a ton of stuff, and almost all of them were amazing. Final Fantasy, Lost Odyssey and Chrono Trigger are, of course, some of the most famous video game soundtracks out there. The man is just pure talent when it comes to making great music. If you have any nostalgia for a JRPG from the late 80’s to the late 90’s, more than likely, Uematsu handled the soundtrack.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
This game, to me, has not one bad song on the soundtrack. Every stage, every menu and every bit of music that comes from this game is catchy. The very fact they removed most of it from the “Reshelled” remake is a travesty. I put hours into this game on the SNES, and the music is burned into my brain, possibly forever. You know what? I don’t care. I love every tune.

The Metal Gear series
The Metal Gear series is one of my favorites of all time. When Metal Gear Solid came out, it had such a cinematic feel to it. Part of this was, of course, how the game played, but the overall feel had much to do with the music in the game. It had a very “Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer” feel to it. That could be because some songs were done by Harry Gregson-Williams, who worked on soundtracks for movies like Enemy of the State and The Rock.

The Guilty Gear series
This fighting game series has always been known for its hard rock soundtrack. It’s very reminiscent of Castlevania music. The game also has references to hard rock bands and songs. The tunes are as good and crazy as the action on the screen. If I ever need to get pumped up for something, I always put on a Guilty Gear album.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
The last game I will talk about is something I played this year. I fell in love with the visuals and story telling. Everything about El Shaddai was beautiful. This includes the music in the game. Sure, the combat was simple at times, but the game was made to be experienced, and the OST for this game made it one to be remembered.

Now, there’s a lot more songs and soundtracks I completely love that I did not mention. Hopefully, I sparked a bit of nostalgia for some readers and turned others on to some new music. So tell me, what are some of your favorite tracks and OSTs?

  1. The first soundtrack I really enjoyed was Core’s Chuck Rock on the Amiga. drove my parents nuts since it played on an incessant loop.

  2. To name a few “The journey home” in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. World map theme song on Xenogears (that went on loop) & Goldfinger’s “Superman” in THPS

  3. Where is Zelda? DX

    • You are right. Zelda does have some amazing music. When I wrote this article, I hadn’t played a Zelda game in years, but now that I have finished A Link Between Worlds, I have been reminded of how great the soundtracks are.
